Kananda on iPhone

ಈ ಹಿಂದೆ ಐಫೋನ್ ನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ದೋಷಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನಾನು ಮೊದಲು ಬರೆದ ಲೇಖನೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ.  ಕೊನೆಗೂ ಐಫೋನ್ ನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಕನ್ನಡ font ರೂಪಿಸುವ ದೋಷವನ್ನು iOS ೪ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸರಿ ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈಗಂತು ಐಫೋನ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಓದೋದಕ್ಕೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಮಜಾ ಬರುತ್ತೆ. iOS ಇನಲ್ಲಿ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕನ್ನಡ font ಇನ ಹೆಸರು Kannada Sangam MN. 

ಆದ್ರೆ ಬೇಸರದ ಸಂಗತಿ ಅಂದ್ರೆ  keyboard ಹಾಗು ಪ್ರಾದೇಶಿಕ ವಿಧಾನದಲ್ಲಿ (regional format ) ಇನ್ನೂ ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕೆ ಬೆಂಬಲವಿಲ್ಲ. 

Update: ಐಫೋನ್ ಇನಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವಂತವಾದ ಕನ್ನಡ Keyboard ಇಲ್ಲದ್ದಿದ್ದರೂ iTransliterate ಅನ್ನೋ ಒಂದು app ಇದೆ. ಅದನ್ನ ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡು ನಾವು ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಟೈಪ್ ಮಾಡಬಹುದು. iTransliterate ಗೂಗಲ್ API ಗಳನ್ನ ಬಳಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅದು ಇಂಟರ್ನೆಟ್ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ನೀವು ಸೀಮಿತವಾದ data ಪ್ಲಾನ್ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತಿದ್ದರೆ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಜೇಬಿಗೆ ಇದು ಭಾರವಾಗಬಹುದು.





Prior to this, I had written a post regarding the defects in iPhone. Finally, the issue with rendering Kannada fonts on iphone has been resolved in iOS 4. I am enjoying reading Kannada on the iphone. The Kannada font used in iOS is called Kannada Sangam MN. However, there is still no support for Kannada keyboard and Region Format on the iphone.

Update: Though iPhone does not have its own Kannada keyboard, there is an app called iTransliterate. Using this you can type in Kannada. iTransliterate uses Google APIs. Hence it uses internet. If you are using a limited data plan, it will be expensive.

ಐಫೋನಿಗೆ ಕೊನೆಗು ಬಂತು ರೇಡಿಯೊ

ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಫೋನ್ ಕಂಪನಿಗಳು ಈಗಂತು ಏನಿಲ್ಲ ಅಂದ್ರೂ ರೇಡಿಯೊ ಅಂತು ಇಡೊದು ಮರೆಯೊಲ್ಲ. ಅಂತದ್ರಲ್ಲಿ Appleನವರು ಇಂತಹದೊಂದು feature ಇಡದೆ ದೊಡ್ಡ ತಪ್ಪ ಮಾಡಿದ್ರು. ಆದರೆ ಕೊನೆಗು ಈ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ಪರಿಹರಿಸೊಕೆ Griffin Technologyರವರು ಈ ಐಫೋನ್ accessory ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇದರ ಬೆಲೆ ಸುಮಾರು $60.00 (ರೂ. ೩೦೦೦). ಒಂದು ರೇಡಿಯೊಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟೆೊಂದು ಬೆಲೆ ಅನಿಸ್ದ್ರು, ಒಂದೆ ಯಂತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲ ಸೌಲಭ್ಯ ಸಿಗೊದ್ರಿಂದ ಈ ಬೆಲೆ ಸಮಂಜಸ ಅನ್ಸುತ್ತೆ. 

ಮಾರ್ಚ್ ತಿಂಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಈ accessoryಗೆ iFMಅನ್ನೊ app ಬೇರೆ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ ಮಾಡ್ತಾರಂತೆ. iFMನಿಂದ ಈ accessoryಅನ್ನು ನಿಯಂತ್ರಿಸ ಬಹುದು. ಇದಲ್ಲದೆ iFM ನಮ್ಮ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ರೇಡಿಯೊ ಪ್ರಸಾರ ಕೇಂದ್ರಗಳ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸಬಲ್ಲದು. ಇದು ಪ್ರಸಾರವಾಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಹಾಡಿನ ಹೆಸರು, ಗಾಯಕ, ಚಿತ್ರ ಮುಂತಾದ ಮಾಹಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಕೂಡ ಕೊಡಬಲ್ಲದು ಅಂತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಈ ಮಾಹಿತಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಸಾರ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕೇಂದ್ರ RDS protocol ಬಳಸಬೇಕು. ಆದ್ರೆ ಬೆಂಗ್ಳೂರಲ್ಲಿ ಎಷ್ಟು ವಾಹಿನಿಗಳು ಇದನ್ನ ಬಳಸ್ತಾವೊ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ

ಇದು ಸದ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ನನಗೆ ತಿಳಿದ ಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಬೆಂಗ್ಳೂರಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲು ಸಿಗ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.

iPhone Dev Teamನವರ ಶ್ರಮದಿಂದಾಗಿ, ಐಫೋನ್ ೩ಜಿ ಅನಿರ್ಬಂಧ್ಸೊ software package (yellowsn0w) ಇವತ್ತಾನೆ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆಯಾಯ್ತು. ಸುಮಾರು ೬ ತಿಂಗಳಿಂದ, ಐಫೋನ್ ೩ಜಿ ಹೊರಬಂದ ದಿನದಿಂದ, ಈ ಸಂತಸದ ಘಳಿಗೆಗಾಗಿ ಕಾಯ್ತಿದ್ದೆ. ಇದು ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗು ಅವರು ಕೊಡೊ ಹೊಸ ವರ್ಷದ ಉಡುಗೊರೆ.

Thanks to the efforts of the amazing iPhone Dev Team, the software unlock package (yellowsn0w) for iPhone 3G was released today. I waited for nearly 6 months, ever since I bought the Phone 3G when it was released in July, for this great moment. It comes as a New Year gift to everyone. 

The unlock process is very simple. It took me close to 2 hrs to upgrade to the latest firmware 2.2, jailbreak using QuickPwn and install yellowsn0w. The detailed instructions to jailbreak and unlock are available at www.iclarified.com

ಐಫೋನ್ ೩ಜಿ (iPhone 3G)

ಹಲವಾರು ಯತ್ನಗಳ ಹಾಗು ಸುಮಾರು ಘಂಟೆಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಸಾಲುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾದ್ನಂತರ ಕೊನೆಗು ನಾನು ನೆನ್ನೆ ಐಫೋನ್ 3Gಯನ್ನು ಖರೀದಿಸ್ದೆ. GPS, accelerometer, app store, 3G, ಮುಂತಾದ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನ ಅಂಗೈ ಗಾತ್ರದ ಸಲಕರಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜೋಡಿಸಿರುವ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ ಐಫೋನ್ ಅದ್ಭುತ. ಅದರೆ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಚಕಿತಗೊಳಿಸಿದ್ದು ಇದರ ಮೊದಲನೆಯ ಐಫೋನಲ್ಲಿಲದ Unicodeನ ಬೆಂಬಲ. ನಾನು ಕನ್ನಡ ಹಾಗು ಹಿಂದಿಯನ್ನು ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸಿದೆ. ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ರೂಪಗೊಳ್ಳದ ಕಾರಣ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ನಿರಾಶಕಾರಿಯಾದರೂ ಒಂದ್ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ ಮುಂದೆ ಅಂತ ಹೇಳ್ಬಹುದು. ಮುಂದಿನ software updateಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ತಿದ್ದಲಾಗುವುದು ಎಂದು ಆಶಿಸ ಬಹುದು.

ಕೆಲ ಗೋಚರಿಸುವ ದೋಷಗಳು:

1. ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ, ‘ಕಾಗುಣಿತದ ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳು’ ಒಂದಾಗಿ ಕಾಣುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
2. ಒತ್ತಕ್ಷರಗಳು ಕೆಳಗೆ ಬರದೆ ಅರ್ಧಾಕ್ಷರಗಳಾಗಿ ಮೂಡುತ್ತವೆ.
3. ಹಿಂದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ, इ ಅಕ್ಷರ ಪಕ್ಕದ ವ್ಯಂಜನಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿ ಮೂಡುತ್ತದೆ.

Update: iOS ೪ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ದೋಷಗಳನ್ನ ಸರಿಪಡಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಲೇಖನೆಯನ್ನು ಓದಿ.

After multiple attempts and long hours in queues, I finally bought the iPhone 3G yesterday. With GPS, accelerometer, app store, 3G and a whole lot of technology built into a palm sized device, iPhone is amazing. But what amazed me was the support for Unicode, which was lacking in the original iPhone. I have been able to test it for Kannada and Hindi. Though it's a bit disappointing, as the glyphs do not render properly, I would say it is a step forward. Something is better than nothing. Hopefully it will be rectified in the future software updates.

Some of the glaring bugs are:

1. In Kannada, the diacritics do not fuse properly.
2. Half consonants do not conjoin to form single glyphs.
3. In Hindi, the diacritic for इ appears on the subsequent letter.
